Mary M. Knight Students Head to SkillsUSA State Competition!
We're excited to announce that our talented SkillsUSA Club members will be representing Mary M. Knight at the SkillsUSA State Competition in Tacoma from March 27-29, 2025!
Our dedicated students have been preparing diligently to showcase their skills in various categories. The Mary M. Knight team will be competing in two events:
American Spirit: Cloey, Andiana, and Logan
Entrepreneurship: Bella, Hayden Roberts, Lexi, and Hayden Hughes
This prestigious competition provides an incredible opportunity for our students to demonstrate their technical abilities, leadership skills, and career readiness on a state level. They'll join hundreds of other talented students from across Washington in events that challenge both their technical and professional skills.
While at the competition, our students will participate in specialized contests, leadership development activities, and networking opportunities with industry professionals. The event culminates with an awards ceremony on March 29th, where we hope to celebrate their achievements!
Our SkillsUSA advisor, Mr. Garrett Johannes, has been working tirelessly to prepare our students for this opportunity. The team will depart on March 27th and return to Mary M. Knight on March 29th.
We're incredibly proud of these students for their dedication and commitment to excellence. Please join us in wishing them the best of luck as they represent our school and community at this prestigious event!

Mary M. Knight School recently welcomed special guests Margaret Garrett, Regional Farm to School Coordinator from our Educational Service District, and Pamela Bish, SNAP-Ed Program Coordinator from WSU Mason & Grays Harbor Counties Extension, who brought the Farm to School program directly to our students.
The visitors prepared and served a nutritious beef stew featuring an impressive variety of locally sourced vegetables from farms right here in our community. Students enjoyed fresh carrots, green beans, onions, yellow potatoes, celery root, rutabaga, turnips, and aromatic herbs like basil, thyme, and parsleyβall grown within miles of our school.
Many of the ingredients came from neighboring farms including Colvin Ranch in Tenino, known for their sustainable grazing practices; Skokomish Valley Farms, which specializes in diverse vegetable production along the fertile Skokomish River; and Harp Acres Farm in McCleary, where a variety of seasonal produce is grown using environmentally friendly methods.
Students had the opportunity to sample this hearty, flavorful dish during their lunch period, giving them firsthand experience with fresh, local ingredients prepared in a delicious way.
"This program helps our students make the connection between local agriculture and healthy eating habits," said Principal Stoney. "It's one of many ways we're working to promote good nutrition while supporting our regional farming community."
The school extends special thanks to our dedicated food service team, whose ongoing commitment to our students' nutrition and wellbeing made this event possible. Their daily efforts ensure our students receive nutritious meals, and their support of special programs like Farm to School enriches the educational experience at Mary M. Knight.
The Farm to School initiative is part of a broader effort to introduce students to nutritious food options while teaching them about sustainable agriculture and the importance of supporting local food systems.

MMK Forestry and Horticulture classes Explore sustainability in forestry and propagation techniques with a Field Trip to Weyerhaeuser Nursery and Tree Farm
Mrs. Cole led our Forestry and Horticulture classes on a visit to Weyerhaeuser Nursery and Mima Tree Farm to gain hands-on insight into large-scale tree cultivation and sustainable forestry practices. The trip provided an in-depth look at seedling production, reforestation efforts, and the science behind growing healthy, high-quality trees for timber and conservation purposes.
At the nursery, we observed the process of seed collection, germination, and the careful management of young trees before they are planted in the field. Experts explained the role of genetics, soil composition, and controlled environments in producing resilient seedlings. We also learned about the challenges of disease management and pest control in a commercial nursery setting.
On the tree farm, we explored different stages of tree growth and care, from newly planted seedings to transplant-ready trees used in reforestation. Weyerhaeuser staff demonstrated sustainable forestry techniques, including selective seed harvesting and long-term land management strategies to maintain ecosystem balance while meeting industry demands.
Overall, the trip provided valuable real-world knowledge of modern forestry and horticulture practices as well as career opportunities within those industries. The experience highlighted the importance of sustainable resource management and gave us a deeper appreciation for the complexities of tree farming and conservation practices
