Good evening, Mary M. Knight families and community!
What an amazing start to our Homecoming Spirit Week! Today, our OWLS showed up ready to soar in their coziest pajamas, and the hallways were filled with smiles, laughter, and incredible school spirit!
From fuzzy slippers to favorite onesies, our students embraced Pajama Day with enthusiasm and pride. It was wonderful to see everyone participating together β from our youngest learners to our upper grades β all united in celebrating what it means to be an OWL!
Days like today remind us of the special community we have here at Mary M. Knight. When our students feel connected and excited to be part of something bigger, it creates memories that last a lifetime and builds the foundation for a positive school culture.
We still have four more days of Spirit Week fun ahead of us, and if today was any indication, this is going to be an unforgettable Homecoming Week! Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to celebrate our OWLS pride.
Tomorrow is Pink Out Day! π We encourage all students and staff to wear pink as we raise awareness for breast cancer. Let's show our support for all those affected by this disease and fill our school with a sea of pink OWLS pride!
Thank you to all our families for supporting Spirit Week and encouraging your students to participate. Your involvement makes all the difference!
Go OWLS! π¦
What was YOUR favorite pajama outfit today? We'd love to hear about it in the comments!

Career Exploration Takes Flight at Satsop Business Park
We're thrilled to share that our MMK OWLS recently attended the Try-a-Trade event on October 9th at Satsop Business Park in Elma! This incredible hands-on learning experience gave our high school students the opportunity to explore dozens of construction trades, connect with industry employers, and discover exciting career pathways right here in our region.
Why Career and Technical Education (CTE) Matters
At Mary M. Knight, we believe that every student deserves to graduate ready for their futureβwhether that means entering the workforce, pursuing an apprenticeship, or continuing their education at a two- or four-year college. Career and Technical Education programs like Try-a-Trade are essential because they:
β¨ Provide real-world context for classroom learning
β¨ Help students discover their passions and strengths through hands-on exploration
β¨ Build connections with local employers and industry professionals
β¨ Open doors to high-demand, well-paying careers in skilled trades
β¨ Develop essential workplace skills like communication, problem-solving, and teamwork
Exploring 18 Skilled Trades
Our students had the chance to engage with professionals from a wide variety of trades, including:
Electricians and Plumbers
Ironworkers and Operating Engineers
Carpenters and Bricklayers
Sheet Metal Workers and HVAC Technicians
And so many more!
Students walked away with new perspectives on career opportunities they may have never considered before. As one participant from last year shared: "Having the opportunity to meet with all of the companies there, discuss their work, and see examples of some of it" made all the difference in understanding what these careers truly entail.
A Heartfelt Thank You to Mrs. Cole
We want to extend our deepest gratitude to Mrs. Cole, one of our dedicated CTE teachers, who organized and accompanied our students to this valuable event. Mrs. Cole's commitment to preparing our OWLS for life after graduation is evident in everything she does, and we're so fortunate to have her leading our CTE programming!
Looking Ahead
Experiences like Try-a-Trade are just one of the many ways we're working to ensure our students are college AND career ready. Whether our OWLS choose a university path, a technical college, an apprenticeship, or direct entry into the workforce, we're committed to giving them the tools, experiences, and confidence they need to succeed.
Go OWLS! π¦
Questions about our CTE programs? Contact the school office or reach out to Mrs. Cole. We're here to support your student's journey toward a bright and successful future!

Today we celebrated Taste Washington Day, where schools across the state serve up meals made with ingredients grown right here in Washington!
π½οΈ Lunch: We dug into stuffed baked potatoes made with Eagle Eye potatoes from Mattawa β these spuds come from rich Columbia Basin soil, giving them that perfect fluffy-inside, crispy-outside bite! π₯
π Washington Apple Crunch: At noon, our students joined the statewide βcrunch heard around Washingtonβ as everyone bit into crisp, juicy apples from Washington Fruit in Yakima β a family-owned farm thatβs been growing some of the stateβs tastiest apples for over a century!
The cafeteria was full of laughter, crunches, and happy faces β and our students proudly showed off their Farm to School stickers! π Weβd say Taste WA Day was a smashing (or should we say crunching) success! π

As you can seeβ¦ some students loved it more than others! π
These muffins were made from scratch with zucchini from Imperialβs Garden in Wapato and carrots from Bolthouse Fresh in Prosser β both amazing Washington farms! πΎ
π₯ Imperialβs Garden is a family-owned farm known for its fresh, high-quality vegetables grown right in the Yakima Valley.
π₯ Bolthouse Fresh is one of Washingtonβs top carrot producers, bringing crisp, sweet flavor straight from Prosser.
We love serving up local ingredients that make our meals both farm fresh and kid approved! π

ππ Itβs Taste Washington Day at MMK! ππ₯
Did you know that every October, schools across Washington celebrate Taste Washington Day? Itβs a state-wide event that puts a spotlight on local farms and food β showing where our food comes from, who grows it, and how it gets to our plates. Itβs all about building connections from farm to fork!
At MMK, weβre joining the fun β and proud to serve top-notch, fresh, Washington-grown foods to our students today (and every day)!
β¨ Breakfast: Harvest Muffins made with zucchini from Imperialβs Garden in Wapato and carrots from Bolthouse Fresh in Prosser.
β¨ Lunch: Stuffed baked potatoes using Eagle Eye potatoes from Mattawa.
β¨ Washington Apple Crunch: At noon, weβll all bite into crunchy apples from Washington Fruit in Yakima β sound the crunch across the whole cafeteria! π
Weβre excited to be part of this effort to bring more quality, local produce into our kitchen and onto student trays. It means fresher flavor, support for Washington farmers, and a stronger connection between our students and the land around us.
Come crunch with us, taste the difference, and join in the celebration!

After finalizing our scratch-made lunch menu last month, weβve now expanded into breakfast. Currently, weβre serving scratch-made breakfast items three days a week, with the goal of reaching five days a week by January.
This week, students enjoyed:
βοΈ Oatmeal Bars (so good that some bought seconds!)
βοΈ Freshly baked Scones
βοΈ Cheesy Potato, Egg & Bacon Bake
Weβre committed to continuing this journey, one recipe at a time, to bring healthier, fresher, and tastier meals to our students every day. π
