π±π On April 24th, our elementary students enjoyed a delicious and educational FFVP (Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program) snack β hydroponic strawberries grown right here in Washington! They learned all about hydroponic plants and how they grow without soil.
Meanwhile, our Horticulture students are diving into hydroponics too! They've started growing lettuce using a system called the Flex Farm, which allows plants to thrive in a water-based, nutrient-rich environment. The best part? The lettuce will be used in our very own MMK salad bar! π₯π§
We're growing knowledge and healthy habits at the same time! πΏ #Hydroponics #FFVP #MMKHorticulture #FreshAndLocal #FlexFarm

Both dishes were a big hit with the students! We've also attached a scaled-down recipe version for families who want to try them at home.
A huge thank you to Pamela Bish from the WSU Extension/SNAP-ED program for bringing fun posters, stickers, and helpful food facts for the students, and to Margaret Garrett, our Regional Farm to School Coordinator at OSPI, for jumping in with the Food Service team to help prepare and serve these amazing dishes.

π£ Exciting News from MMK! π£
School districts have the option to order local food through commodities for just a small processing fee β and we jumped at the chance! Mary M. Knight School District secured an entire box of Coho Salmon for only $7.29! π
Thanks to this opportunity, our students got to try Iraqi Five Spiced Salmon, made with salmon sourced from Muckleshoot Seafood Products, proudly owned by the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe.
Showcasing our regionβs naturally resourced ingredients has become one of our favorite ways to treat our students β and celebrate local culture! πΏ

Our Elementary Owls Soared to Success!
We're thrilled to share that our elementary students have earned their special reward through our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program! For the past two weeks, our young Owls have been working diligently toward their goals of reducing office referrals, improving attendance rates, and meeting their i-Ready learning time targets.
Their hard work paid off today as they enjoyed extra recess time and special treats while soaking up the beautiful sunshine. It was wonderful to see our students celebrating together and enjoying the rewards of their collective efforts.
The PBIS program continues to encourage positive behavior and academic engagement throughout Mary M. Knight, and we couldn't be prouder of how our elementary students rose to meet their challenges.
Congratulations to all our elementary Owls! Your dedication to positive behavior and learning shows what makes our MMK community so special.
